Pittsburgh, PA (February 5, 2020) – Real estate luminary and founder of the third-largest real estate brokerage in the country Howard W. Hanna, Jr. will be celebrating his 100th birthday on February 10, 2020.
This legend in the world of real estate founded the company in 1957 in Pittsburgh, after serving as an American Liaison Officer with the British Army in India during World War II. Mr. Hanna and his late wife, Anne Freyvogel Hanna, began the company with a modest dividend check in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
From one office, the company has grown to become a real estate powerhouse as not only the third-largest real estate company in the United States, but the largest family-owned and –operated real estate company in the nation. The company’s second office opened in 1973 in Fox Chapel, PA, and today, there are more than 300 Howard Hanna offices located across 10 states.

Canary lined tablet in hand, a (sharpened) number 10 pencil and always sharing a great Real Estate story… I, personally, won’t ever forget how he told me about how “Alan Kells” was founded and how back then nobody hired woman, but he did without hesitation and THAT to me, is priceless! 🙂 HAPPY 100th Mr. Hanna (Bop Bop). 🙂

Loved the times when I used to stop by the Perry Highway office and visit with him. Such a great down-to-earth guy! I was PAR President and he was a State Real Estate Commissioner.
You know what we all should realize? Just imagine where we all would be, if he never made that decision to start Howard Hanna Real Estate, “THAT would have been SAD”. A second of inspiration, gave us all the ability to provide for ourselves by sustaining a “GREAT” career in Real Estate. A lot to be thankful for! Thank you “Bop Bop”.
