A property listed by Howard Hanna Real Estate Services was recently the focus of a Living History article in The Wall Street Journal. In addition to describing the history and design of the $2.25 million home, the article also focused on the story of Jay Apt, 71, who is currently a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
During his career as an astronaut, Mr. Apt completed four space missions, including two spacewalks. He credits his childhood home in Pittsburgh, a circa 1952 modern house with floor-to-ceiling windows, “for providing an early acute connection to nature” and inspiring his career path.
On the market for the first time since it was built, the home is listed by Amy Bair, a REALTOR® with the Howard Hanna Shadyside office. Designed for Mr. Apt’s parents by noted architect and curator A. James Speyer, the house has changed very little since it was constructed.
While some minor changes have been made to the house over time, it is described as “strikingly intact”:
“It is remarkable how well a steel and glass flat-roofed house has held up over 70 years,” he said. “The house is still as sturdy as the day it was built, which is what Pittsburgh steel will do for you.”
