8 Ways to Winterize Your Home

The leaves are starting to turn beautiful shades of orange and yellow, and colder weather is just around the corner. Now is a great time to check these eight maintenance items to ensure your home stays safe and cozy all winter.

  1. Clean your gutters and downspouts of any leaves or debris.
  2. Drain and disconnect outside garden hoses and turn off exterior spigots.
  3. Reverse the flow of ceiling fans. Setting them to spin clockwise will circulate the warmer air in your home.
  4. Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees to help prevent frozen pipes.
  5. Flush your water heater to remove any sediment that has accumulated.
  6. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. You should do this at least twice yearly but monthly is even better.
  7. Replace your HVAC filters to maximize efficiency and prevent any buildup.
  8. Bring your outdoor patio furniture inside or cover it up to protect it from the elements.
